While working as a waiter at Osgoode Hall,Thornton hatched the idea for a taxi service in his newfound home. By 1837, he had built the first cab in Toronto, a red-and-yellow horse-drawn box cab called “The City.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Blackburns’ business thrived and they remained active members of the Toronto community, helping other escaped slaves to settle in Toronto, helping build the Little Trinity Church (Toronto’s oldest surviving church) and working with the co-founder of the Anti-Slavery Society, George Brown. The instantly recognizable, iconic red-and-yellow colour scheme of their taxi service was eventually adopted by the City of Toronto’s public transit system and, from 1921 onward, became the official colours of the TTC.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHad the Blackburns chosen to reward themselves for their hard work with a cold beer at the end of the day, it would have been a lot like this one, a classic ale brewed in the traditional style of the 19th century. For this Ides, we were inspired by the story of The White Lady, a ghost who’s said to have been haunting the building since it first opened in 1893.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original building on the site was an asylum for clinically insane women and, when it was demolished, the same limestone that once lined cells of ‘lunatics’ was incorporated into the basement walls of Queen’s Park.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe White Lady is said to be a young lady who was abandoned in the asylum by her husband. She took it upon herself to make the 32 kilometre trek through rough terrain to warn the British.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInformation in hand, the British and their Mohawk allies repelled the Americans, who surrendered in a field near the Welland Canal. 500 prisoners were taken to the British base at Ball’s Falls. The loss demoralized American troops and, from then til the end of the war, they kept their patrols close to home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the 100th anniversary of Laura’s walk, a patriotic Canadian named Brand O’Connor opened up a chocolate shop at the corner of Yonge and Elm Streets in commemoration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis month, we say thanks to Laura Secord for making it possible for us to watch the U.S. elections from a distance. Within months, Munro had established a manufacturing plant to service demand from major retailers. By the early 1940s, $5 table hockey games were selling like hotcakes from department store catalogues.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe game was so popular with Canadian troops during World War II that Munro’s son, Donald Jr., was required to pay service calls at military bases in the UK in order to do repairs. By the mid-1950s, as many as 75,000 Canadian homes had table hockey, and competitors had sprouted up across North America, spurring all many of bells, whistles, refinements and deluxe editions to get kids excited at Christmas for decades to come.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eVideo games may have taken over as the favoured indoor pastime, but table hockey still has its loyalists and a place in hearts around the world. The store pulled up roots two or three times during the ensuing decade, before settling in at its Yonge St location in 1981.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOn Church St since 2016, Glad Day has expanded its role as a community hub, with an accessible coffee shop, bookstore \u0026amp; bar that hosts readings, performances and community meetings, as well as offering a wide online LGBTQ lit at:\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.gladdaybookshop.com\/\"\u003egladdaybookshop.com\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Belgian blonde was developed with the Pride Flag as an inspiration. Red raspberries, orange peel, yellow pale barley malt, green hops, blue water and purple heather flowers. While we call it a Belgian ‘blonde’, Glad Day pours a hazy pink colour with notes of tart raspberries, fruity esters and a hint of herbal, floral hops.
