CFNY

🎬 The Spirit of Radio

The Rush Day Edit

At 4pm, we'll be screening an exclusive edit of CFNY – The Spirit of Radio — a documentary about the trailblazing Toronto radio station that inspired one of Rush's most beloved songs.

This exclusive cut has been prepared just for Rush Day, and features never-before-seen interview footage of Geddy Lee discussing the band's early synth use—both live and in-studio, the alternative sounds that shaped the band, and CFNY's role in the Rush story from the very beginning.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with four special guests who have played notable roles in that story and in Toronto radio history.

David Marsden

Former Program Director of CFNY, David is the first person to EVER play Rush on the radio (as confirmed by Alex Lifeson), and coined the phrase "The Spirit of Radio". He's also featured in the song's animated video.

Alan Cross

A self-described Rush geek, Alan is one of the most well-known broadcast journalists in Canada, and host of The Ongoing History of New Music.

Liz Janik

Name-checked in the song The Spirit of Radio ("begin the day with a friendly voice"), Liz is featured in the doc and joins us discuss to the history of CFNY and Rush.

Ivar Hamilton

Universal Music archivist, former CFNY DJ, and lifelong Rush collector, Ivar returns to Rush Day to discuss the doc and to spin a Rush-themed DJ set at 12pm.
